"This Girl Can" or how to have fun while doing sport

Some time ago, a campaign was launched to encourage girls and women to do more sport without fear of others judgement.

It’s not because we are girls that we can not sweat like a pig by doing physical exercise ... and love it! As This Girl can tell us: "our research showed there is a significant gender gap in terms of participation in sport: 1.8 million fewer women than men play sport regularly and 2.9 m more women than men play no sport at all."

This Girl Can is a video that has made a lot of noise when it was launched. Posted Monday, January 12, it has already been viewed over 7 million times. This is an idea of Sport England, a public association that aims to encourage women’s to do more sport and convince them to overcome their fear of judgement. Indeed England, studies show that 3 million women do no sport and that is the fear of the facing the other which is the main obstacle to any physical activity.

Indeed, in just 1 minute 30, it shows that sport is not just for hotties who display their abs at the gym or all over Instagram. Sport is for all the girls who want to vent while having fun. To prove it, Sport England has recruited ‘normal' girls, who enjoy running and swimming, but also drink beer every now and then.

We seen them in full effort and moving actively on the sound of Get Ur Freak On by Missy Elliott. They are all red and sweaty, but they are enjoying their time and do not care about their image. Their aim? "To have as many organisations and clubs as possible to use the assets we’ve created and share via social media, web sites, merchandise and in hard copy poster form around sporting venues. Together we can inspire more women and girls to move and prove that judgement is a barrier that can be overcome".

Although, they received a lot of positive reactions after the advert was aired.

"Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from both men and women. We have been inundated with partnership requests, as well as the number of people joining in with the conversation online – which is all great news."

To this day, they have over 4,000 partners that have signed up to take part.

The video was so inspiring that we went to a zumba class. We came into a busy room, with an exclusively female audience who was waiting for the coach to come, while repeating the steps they already knew.

As a result, we had a great time, we had fun. And no need to pay extra attention to our image or sweat.

At the end of the class, we met Marine, a young woman of 21 years old. Not being very athletic ("lack of motivation,"), she made the resolution "to get back to sport."

She chose Zumba because she is "not good at dancing and I wanted to try something new that would allow me to vent."

She adds “I refine my body while dancing like crazy on Latin rhythms and surrounded by strong women."

Now, it’s your time to take the plunge!
